The trailhead at Preikestolen Parking is about a 40-minute drive from Stavanger through the Ryfylke tunnel. In the main season, express buses from central Stavanger take about 50 minutes to an hour; getting to Preikestolen compares every option.
Not a direct one: the express buses run in the main season only. Out of season, take bus no. 100 from Stavanger to Jørpelandsvågen and a taxi of about 10 minutes to the trailhead.
As published by the Preikestolen Foundation, NOK 275 for a car staying more than 2 hours, NOK 100 for a motorcycle and NOK 1,200 for a bus. You pay at the machine after your hike; check the rates before you go.
About 8 km there and back, with around 500 metres of ascent. Most people take about 4 hours; the hike guide covers the route and the seasons.
Yes, the trail is open all year, but from October to April it is often covered in ice and snow. The tourism board recommends going with a guide in winter, and you should use spikes.
No. The plateau, about 25 x 25 metres and 604 metres above the Lysefjord, has no railings or barriers at the edge, so keep a safe distance.
Yes. Rødne's Lysefjord cruise from Strandkaien in Stavanger runs all year and passes beneath the cliff on a 3–3.5 hour round trip; the cruise guide also covers the cruise-and-hike days.
Yes. Neither express bus sells tickets on board, and you must return with the same company. The tours page lists transfers, cruises and guided hikes.
